10 reasons why you should get a cat

10 reasons why you should get a cat

In 2015 (on December 31, exactly, to end the year well), we decided to adopt a cat. Our little Leia came into our lives only two days after, January 2, 2016, and since then, she has not ceased to fill our days with love and hugs. Of course, she is a responsibility for us, and it is no longer as easy as before going on vacation or weekend, for example. But you can’t imagine how happy I am that we made this decision almost four years ago now and how much happiness she brings to our home.

She became a full member of our family, and we love her as our child (besides, we take great care of her, which goes through having proper insurance which we will also talk about in the article). So, if you too are asking yourself the question of adopting a cat, I answer you with a big “GO FOR IT” and illustrate this with 10 reasons why you should get a cat.

10 reasons why you should get a cat

  1. Cats are simply adorable

Their little face has seduced humans for centuries, and we understand why. Cats have such a cute little head, whether they’re babies or adults. Their body is thin, elegant, muscular, and they move in a wholly agile and remarkable way. They are very good at moving between very close objects without dropping them, due to their agility. But when they decide, they also like to throw them over tables/shelves, etc. voluntarily and watch them fall to the ground. Haha. Have you ever noticed? They are so annoying when they do this! But we forgive them all the time because they are just too cute!

  1. They bring joy to a home

Cats are the kings of nonsense. Running like crazy a few minutes a day throughout the apartment (it’s the famous “quarter of an hour of cat madness”), playing with everything and anything (and I assure you, it can be simple dust), meowing to ask for their bowl or a hug … cats all have a damn little personality, and they will make you laugh a lot.

They bring joy to a house by their presence, their little habits, but also with all the love they bring to you.

  1. Cats reduce stress levels

Purring therapy” is now well known. Scientists have indeed proven that low-frequency vibrations and sounds emitted by cats when they purr have therapeutic properties in humans. It has even been shown that cat owners are less likely to experience chronic stress or cardiovascular disease.

So, please don’t skimp on hugs-purrs with your kitty. It makes us feel good, and it makes them feel good!

  1. They go along with all members of the family

Some cat breeds are very social, others less. Find out beforehand about the kind of cat you would like to adopt. But most cats, especially if accustomed to cuddling from the first days, like intimate moments. You have to know how to respect their rhythm and not to force them. Unlike dogs, cats do what they want when they want and can more easily be “trained.” But a happy cat will be able to find a moment with each inhabitant of the household to be close to him and to share playful and cuddling moments.

  1. You don’t need to walk them

One of the significant advantages of adopting a cat versus a dog, for example, is that you don’t have to take them out several times a day. Indeed, a cat makes its needs in its litter (apartment) or outside (house with authorization to leave).

  1. Cats are very clean

This continues well on the previous point. Cats are very clean animals. Their mom, from a very young age, teaches them to make their needs in their litter (and / or in the ground) and to cover them when finished.

A cat that poops or pees outside of its litter box in the home is a sign of stress, or of having been weaned too early. Do not hesitate to talk to your veterinarian, who can advise you on the best solutions available.

A cat that is happy, calm, and that has been adopted at the right time in its kitten life, should be a clean pet.

Besides, there is no need to wash a cat. Cats clean themselves daily. They do it in a meticulous way, which is very soothing to watch — a real “Zen” moment.

  1. They give so much love

Cats show us a lot of love signs every day. They cannot speak and tell us that they love us, but they show it to us in many different ways:

  • they blink when they look us in the eye (a sign of friendship and trust)
  • they rub on our legs
  • they cuddle us while purring
  • they roll on the ground with all four legs in the air, a sign of submission and high confidence
  • and so many others… Leia, for example, likes to lie on our chest when we are lying down or sitting on the sofa. She lies like this: one leg on each side of our body and her head in our chest. She does this several times a day and needs it. It’s her little moment of love, to let go, and that fills us with happiness. After years, I still melt as much!
  1. They are playful

All cats love to play. It comes from their hunting instinct. They like to run after prey (which you can replace with a portion of flying food, a cat toy, etc.), catch them, play with them, tap them with their hind legs.

It is essential to play with your cat to keep it healthy and to stimulate its senses and instincts, at least a little each day. Think about it; even a few minutes will be enough and will make him happy!

  1. They are inspiring by their “zenitude”

Cats spend their lives playing, sleeping, eating, and pooping/peeing, then playing, sleeping, eating, all over again. Happiness, right? How could they not be zen after all?

But cats are indeed an example of zen, always with a quiet, calm face. They are doing things slowly and meticulously (like cleaning themselves). They inspire me a lot, and sometimes just watching Leia for long minutes has a calming effect on me.

  1. They will love you for ever!

A cat knows very well who its owner is and develops a real love for him/her. If you decide to get a cat, you will make a friend for life.

The importance of taking care of your cat

A cat brings us a lot daily, but we must not forget that this friendship goes both ways. Adopting a cat is a responsibility for which you commit yourself throughout its life (on average, 15 years, sometimes more). So think about it before you get a cat! You have to be sure you want to take charge of this little life and bring it happiness every day. You will have to take care of him, feed him properly, love him tirelessly, and treat him if he gets sick.

If healthcare problems occur, it is better to take out insurance so you’re sure you can afford everything. Thus, you will be covered in the event of high costs (eg, surgery, drugs, etc.).

As soon as we got Leia, we subscribed to Agria. Agria is a Swedish company and is a leader in Scandinavia and present in 6 countries. They insure more than a million animals across Europe, and I invite you to visit their site to consult their cat insurance offers.

J’adore les chats, malheureusement ma vie ne me permet pas du tout d’en avoir un pour l’instant. Mais je reste persuadée que j’en aurais un quand j’aurais une vie un peu plus “posée” ahah.

    Des bisous !
